I worked on Lake Tekapo Huts with Studio Billy, focusing on construction detailing and sectional documentation for a series of transportable units built by Makespace. My role was to take the agreed design and resolve how the envelope, structure and linings came together so each hut could be fabricated off site, transported to Tekapo and installed as a finished module.
On this project I was responsible for the sections and construction details that sit behind the finished huts. The aim was to give Makespace clear, repeatable information so the units could be built accurately in the workshop and perform well once on site.
Lake Tekapo Huts are a series of simple, transportable cabins clad in red corrugated metal, taking cues from classic rural wool sheds and farm buildings. The forms are compact and direct, with generous openings to the landscape and a colour and material palette that feels familiar in the high-country setting. My contribution was to support that idea with clean, buildable details and sections so the huts read as straightforward, robust objects in the landscape.
