I was engaged to work on Paataka Kai by Toi Waamu Concepts which was commissioned by a major client. My role was to take their concept and turn it into a buildable structure, providing the layout and detailing needed for construction and installation. Even though no consent was required, I designed and documented the structure to meet New Zealand building standards so it could be fabricated, transported and fixed in place with confidence.
On this project I translated a traditional concept into clear construction information. I set out the plan, worked through structural logic and fixing points, and detailed how the carved components connect to the supporting frame so the whole piece could be built in the workshop, then transported and installed on site without damaging the artwork or losing alignment.
Paataka Kai is treated as a contemporary art piece that draws inspiration from the traditional  maaori food store. The structure lifts and holds Toi Waamu’s carving as a single object in the landscape, with posts, platform and roof kept simple so the carving stays at the centre. My focus was on making the form clear and robust enough to live outside while still feeling respectful to the kaupapa behind it.
